Consistency throughout the season proved to be the formula for success for the Surrey, UK based rider Gino Rea of the Ten Kate Honda squad as he becomes the new European Superstock 600 champion, a title disputed by just one point from second and three points from third. The championship-deciding race was festooned with lead changes as the two Yamaha’s of Bussolotti and Lonbois kept the Honda rider’s final race from being anything but easy.
The tenth lap of race winner Bussolotti stopped the clock with a new lap record of 1’47.940, half a second faster than the Yamaha of Loris Baz from 2008, although the day’s track temperature was 15°C warmer. The DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC2 control tyres for the class left new lap records standing at seven out of ten rounds of the championship, not counting Imola’s lack of precedent as a newly added, newly renovated circuit.
Special guest for the race was Jaume Ferrer, winner of the 600STK category of the Pirelli Superstock Series in Spain. The 17-year-old from Manresa, Spain earned a spot for his TMR Competicion Kawasaki for his participation and win in the locally organized Pirelli racing series.
Honda takes its first championship in this class since its initiation at the start of the 2005 season. Pirelli looks forward to the growth of this young champion, as all of the last five class winners: Corti, Simeon, Berger, and Baz have all moved onto the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup.
